Calcite
Calcite, a carbonate mineral, gets its name from “chalix”, the Greek word for lime. It is very abundant, composing about 4% of the earth’s crust. Calcite is formed in many different geological environments, such as hot springs, and in caverns as stalagtites or stalagmites. Its color is highly variable.
